Daniel Kvammen - Maktlaus
In February, Daniel Kvammen released his second album, the critically acclaimed «Vektlaus». And his singles «Me dansar ikkje for moro skyld», «Om du vil ei gong til», «Gatelangs gjennom sorg og synd» and «Som om himmelen revna» have been widely played on Norwegian radio. Only six months later, Kvammen releases its sister album, «Maktlaus», displaying an ambitious project.
Where «Vektlaus» was about love and especially the loss of it, «Maktlaus» is a considerably more political and outward beast.
- The songs on the album were born in a limbo between the country boy who moved to the city and the city boy who moved in from the countryside. An outsider looking at the outside world with eyes wide open. Our common mentality, comfortable wealth, powerlessness and hunger for more. I was thinking it was time to use the mouthpiece I’ve been given to say some well chosen words about the state of things. I may be offending someone, but at least I’ve contributed to the moral tug-og-war we’re in the middle of.

«Maktlaus» was introduced to the world with the Lars Vaular guesting single «Som om himmelen revna», which was released in August and received critical appraisal and heavy rotation on the radio station NRK P3. And together with his producer Even Ormestad (a-ha, Jaga Jazzist), Kvammen has created a subtle and subversive pop universe this time, too.
- «Maktlaus» and «Vektlaus» were recorded at the same time, and early in the process it became obvious that we had something that was greater than one single album. It had to be and it was going to be two records. «Maktlaus» is in many ways the more eccentric and dark reflection of «Vektlaus», both lyrically and musically, Daniel says.
- Love is to a large extent also represented on «Maktlaus», but as on the rest of the album, the underlying thematic structure is dedicated to powerlessness. As opposed to the more hopeful and melancholy thread on his last record.
There are many references and nods to the many giants in the history of pop music, nor are there any lack of prominent guest musicians on «Maktlaus». Topping the team are Amund Maarud, Tuva Syvertsen (Valkyrien Allstars), Erlend Mokkelbost (JR Ewing, Montée), David Wallumrød, Cato Salsa, Simen Følstad Nilsen (Aiming for Enrike) and Anders Røyne (Sudan Dudan).
